Crochet for Beginners: A Simple Guide to Start Creating with Yarn

Hello, lovely friends! 🌷

Welcome to Mumy Time, my little corner of the internet where I share the things I love most: crochet, homemade recipes, cozy moments, and simple creative projects.

If you’ve always wanted to learn crochet but didn’t know where to begin, you’re in the right place. I still remember the feeling of holding a crochet hook for the first time and thinking, “How am I supposed to make something beautiful with this?” 😄

The good news? Crochet is much easier than it looks.

You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need expensive supplies. And you definitely don’t need to make everything perfect.

You simply need some yarn, a crochet hook, a little patience—and the desire to create something with your own hands. ❤️

Let’s begin!

🧶 What Do You Need to Start Crocheting?

One of my favorite things about crochet is that you can start with just a few basic supplies.

1. A Crochet Hook

For beginners, I recommend starting with a 5 mm crochet hook. It’s comfortable to hold and works well with medium-weight yarn.

You can find hooks made from:

  • Aluminum
  • Plastic
  • Bamboo
  • Ergonomic materials

Choose whichever feels comfortable in your hand.

2. Yarn

Don’t choose very thin yarn when you’re just starting.

A medium-weight yarn is much easier to see and handle while you’re learning your stitches.

I especially love soft colors such as:

🌸 Pink
🤍 Cream
🌿 Sage green
🩷 Dusty rose
☕ Warm beige

They’re perfect for creating that cozy handmade feeling.

3. Scissors

A small pair of sharp scissors is all you need to cut your yarn.

4. Yarn Needle

You’ll use this to hide your yarn ends when your project is finished.

5. Stitch Markers

These aren’t essential, but they can make learning much easier—especially when you’re working in rounds.

✨ The First Crochet Techniques You Should Learn

Don’t try to learn 20 stitches at once.

When I teach beginners, I like to keep things simple.

Start with these five basic techniques:

1. The Slip Knot

Almost every crochet project begins with a slip knot.

It’s the little loop you place onto your crochet hook before making your first stitches.

Don’t worry if it feels awkward at first. Your hands will remember the movement surprisingly quickly!

2. The Chain Stitch

The chain stitch is usually the first stitch beginners learn.

It looks like a little row of connected loops:

○—○—○—○—○

Once you can make chains evenly, you’re ready to move on.

3. Single Crochet

The single crochet is one of the most useful beginner stitches.

It’s simple, creates a firm fabric, and is perfect for:

  • Washcloths
  • Small baskets
  • Amigurumi
  • Scarves
  • Bags
  • Granny square projects

4. Double Crochet

The double crochet is taller than the single crochet and creates a softer, more open fabric.

It’s wonderful for:

  • Blankets
  • Scarves
  • Shawls
  • Cardigans
  • Granny squares

5. Fastening Off

When your project is finished, you’ll need to secure your yarn.

This is called fastening off.

Then simply weave the remaining yarn tail into your project using your yarn needle.

🌷 Your First Beginner Crochet Project

If you’re completely new to crochet, don’t start with a huge blanket.

Trust me. 😉

Start with something small.

I recommend making a simple crochet coaster.

It’s quick, useful, and gives you a chance to practice your stitches without becoming overwhelmed.

Beginner Crochet Coaster

You’ll need:

  • Medium-weight yarn
  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Step 1 — Make a Slip Knot

Place the slip knot on your hook.

Step 2 — Make a Chain

Make 10–12 chain stitches.

Try to keep your tension relaxed.

Step 3 — Start Your First Row

Work single crochet stitches across the chain.

Don’t worry if your first row looks a little uneven.

Mine certainly did! 😄

Step 4 — Continue

Turn your work and make another row of single crochet.

Continue until your coaster looks approximately square.

Step 5 — Finish

Fasten off your yarn and weave in the ends.

And that’s it!

🎉 You just made your first crochet project!

💕 Don’t Worry About Making Mistakes

This is probably the most important advice I can give you.

Your first crochet project does not need to be perfect.

Your stitches might be too tight.

Your edges might be uneven.

You might accidentally add an extra stitch.

You might even have to undo an entire row.

That’s completely normal.

Crochet is a skill your hands learn through repetition.

Instead of asking:

“Why isn’t mine perfect?”

Ask yourself:

“What did I learn from this?”

Every mistake teaches you something.

🧵 Understanding Crochet Tension

One thing that confused me when I first started was tension.

Tension simply means how tightly or loosely you’re holding your yarn and making your stitches.

If you crochet very tightly, your fabric may become stiff and small.

If you crochet very loosely, your fabric may become large and floppy.

Don’t try to force your hands into a particular tension.

With practice, you’ll naturally develop a comfortable rhythm.

☕ Put on your favorite music.

🧶 Pick up your yarn.

❤️ And simply practice.

🌸 5 Easy Crochet Projects for Beginners

Once you’ve learned the basic stitches, you’re ready to have some fun!

Here are five projects I’d recommend:

🩷 1. Crochet Coasters

A perfect first project.

They’re small, quick, and useful.

🧣 2. Simple Scarf

A scarf is wonderful for practicing the same stitch repeatedly.

👜 3. Crochet Tote Bag

Once you’re comfortable with single crochet or double crochet, try making a simple bag.

🌼 4. Granny Squares

Granny squares are one of my favorite crochet projects.

You can make individual squares and eventually turn them into:

  • Blankets
  • Bags
  • Pillow covers
  • Cardigans
  • Baby blankets

🧺 5. Small Crochet Basket

A little handmade basket is both practical and beautiful.

I love using mine to store yarn and crochet hooks.

☕ Make Crochet Part of Your Cozy Routine

For me, crochet isn’t only about making things.

It’s about slowing down.

There is something incredibly peaceful about sitting at the table with a cup of coffee, a basket of yarn beside me, and a crochet hook in my hand.

Sometimes I’ll crochet for 20 minutes.

Sometimes an hour passes without me noticing.

And that’s the magic of handmade things.

In a world where everything moves so quickly, crochet gives us permission to slow down.

🌿 My Beginner Crochet Tips

After spending many cozy hours with yarn and hooks, here are my favorite tips for anyone starting out:

1. Start small.
Don’t begin with a complicated sweater.

2. Use light-colored yarn.
It’s easier to see your stitches.

3. Don’t crochet too tightly.
Relax your hands.

4. Count your stitches.
Especially at the end of every row.

5. Practice the same stitch repeatedly.
Your hands will become more comfortable.

6. Don’t be afraid to undo your work.
Sometimes “frogging” is part of crochet! 🐸

7. Enjoy the process.
The goal isn’t perfection.

❤️ Final Thoughts From Mumy Time

If you’ve been thinking about learning crochet, this is your sign to start.

Pick up a hook.

Choose a beautiful ball of yarn.

Make your first little chain.

It might look messy.

That’s okay.

Your second attempt will be better.

Your tenth will be better still.

And one day, you’ll look at something you’ve made and realize:

“I made this with my own hands.”

That feeling never gets old. 🧶❤️

So grab your yarn, make yourself a cup of coffee, and let’s create something cozy together.

Happy crocheting, friends! 🌷
